Scottie:
- Powerful & brave (chasing someone over a rooftop); police officer -> doing his duty
- Respected
- Was a lawyer -> very intelligent -> quit job to become police officer which conveys that he wants & lusts for excitement in his life -> addiction to danger = would rather quit the police force than sit behind a desk
- Fearful -> in regards to heights because of his vertigo (acrophobia)
- Compulsive behaviour
- Stubborn
- Headstrong -> decisive
- Not tied to anyone, is a bachelor -> against typical idea of 1950's American family, to have a bachelor was out of the ordinary
- Doesn't like to show weakness -> meeting with Midge, refuses to go away & says incident will have no affect on him -> emasculated
- Unwillingness to confront his problems (his vertigo in a medical way)
- Childish elemint
- Likes action -> refuses to help Gavin initially as finds the idea of watching someone by the lake to be boring
- Anxious when meeting Gavin the 2nd time -> leaning forward -> agitated

Midge:
- Sophisticated
- Motherly -> her conversation with Scottie at the start of the film & catches Scottie when he fallse
- Bookish -> bases stuff on what she has read -> reads between the lines
- Caring
- Sympathetic towards Scottie

Madeleine Elster:
- Arrogant
- Seducer -> very aware of her own beauty
- She constantly stands out
- Hitchcock blonde
- Remote -> ghost-like -> doesn't give a lot
- Mysterious
- Cold
- Character traits displayed through mies-en-scene
- Dress is green = colour of envy

Gavin Elster:
- Controlled in his words & movements
- Controlling behaviour
- Manipulative
- Dominant
- Demanding
- Observant
- Stuck in the past -> his comments about San Francisco
- Powerful
- Affluent -> rich/wealthy through wife's family -> can see this through mies-en-scene
- Juxtaposes with Scottie: Gavin is cool, calm & collected whereas Scottie gets physically agitated
